Year 7 Super 8’s County Finals

We were truly blessed with some fantastic weather for the finals of the Year 7 Super 8’s athletics competition when we travelled to Medway Athletics track last week.  Our team, having won the earlier round at Canterbury High, were going forward to represent Canterbury District together with Barton Court School boys.

Our team consisted of Kiera Markes, Anna Murray, Darcie Maple, Kestrel Davies. Katherine Lindsay, Eve Seerey, Hannah Matthews and Alexia Velarde Rogers.  Each athlete was required to compete in a track event, a field event and a relay which meant that they needed to be extremely versatile athletes.

A few highlights of the day were Eve and Darcie in the hurdles, both girls plus Katherine and Kiera in the medley relay and Katherine in the long jump. The girls gained some very valuable experience against some extremely good competition. This experience certainly payed off at the District Athletics Championships which they won convincingly! The Year 8 team had a fabulous day of netball on Thursday at Rainham School for Girls. With so many talented girls to choose from team selection was very challenging and it took most of the tournament before we found the the strongest combination out on court. To say that the girls were flexible and accommodating to all my demands of where I wanted them to play would be an understatement! Beth Ford transferred from GS to GK and played an absolute blinder and Martha Rolison, our usual GK, ended up playing both a super WD and C. A special mention must go to Mrs Murphy for umpiring for us today. The girls appreciated her high standard of umpiring and positive comments that she showered on them at the end of every game. We look forward to trying out our new found positions against Herne Bay High on Monday. Miss Creaney

The success of the Year 7 netball team continues with a 15-6 win against Sir Roger Manwoods. This was by far our toughest game and the goals did not come easily! But the girls worked hard throughout and played with fantastic team spirit. Well done girls. Mrs Newman

The under 16 basketball team had a fantastic win against Canterbury High on Tuesday. The girls got off to a strong start scoring three baskets in the first few minutes of the game. The final score was 35 - 16 which bodes well for the forthcoming district tournament which takes place in February. Well done to the team who remain undefeated. Miss Creaney
The Year 9 basketball team travelled to Whitstable Community School to play their second game of the season on Tuesday 8th January. The team took a while to adjust to playing on a full size basketball court but when they did they were absolutely on fire! A number of amazing lay-up shots were scored towards the end of the game with the final score being 40 baskets to 10 - another convincing win for the Langton team! Miss Creaney

On Wednesday 21st November 10 girls set out to Redbridge Sports Centre to represent Kent in the Tier 4 Regional Hockey competition. They played 6 matches against schools from throughout the East Region. The first match started slowly with no goals scored in the first half despite SLGGS having all the possession. However, this was remedied in the last 5 minutes with an influx of 4 goals. Result 4-0 win. Throughout the day the girls played superbly well as a team creating many chances. Only 2 goals were conceded in 6 matches which was a testament to the team’s hard work.

Overall the team scored 25 goals, won 5 out of the 6 games which resulted in us returning as Regional Champions.

Year 7 Super 8's
It was the first summer competition for our Year 7 athletes this week at Canterbury High when they took part in the Kent Schools Super 8 Competition. Each team member has to participate in a track, a field and a sprint relay therefore the girls selected were our most versatile. There were some great performances throughout the afternoon from individuals however the highlight was when the relay teams took to the track and won both of their heats. As overall winners we go on as a school to represent the district at the county round to be held on 14th June at the Julie Rose Stadium. The team consisted of Ayva Watters, Lorna Forbes, Ella Stephenson, Nancy Allan, Jess Collins, Iona Lester and Gabs Kilvert-Scott.

The Year 8 Netball Team came second in the District Tournament.  Winning all of their matches apart from the one against Kent College (5-1). Throughout the tournament they played 9 games, scoring a total of 56 goals and conceding just 7! The team have worked extremely hard all season and have developed some really strong partnerships. I hope they continue to build upon this next season. The team on the day were Daisy Redford, Olivia Brooks-Merino, Beth Langdale, Lara Hulbert, Poppy Lintott, Hannah Smith, Chenxi Wang, Amelie Hull, Tilly Parsons and Chloe Sands. A special mention needs to go to Maddie Hull who has been a fabulous GA all season but unfortunately missed the tournament due to illness. The Year 7 and 8 Sports Hall Athletics Teams travelled to Medway Park in Gillingham to represent the district having won the local round quite convincingly. Walking into the sports hall and being surrounded by literally hundreds of athletes can be really quite daunting but the girls rose to the challenge and performed to an extremely high standard across the board and both teams were placed third in the county! This is a fantastic achievement and we are so very proud of them all. A huge thank you to Mrs Aitken for taking the teams whilst I was in Malta accompanying the senior netball teams on tour. Sports Leaders

A huge thank you to the Year 9 Sports Leaders who ran the Year 8 inter-house netball tournament on Tuesday. Basketball Results

The U14 basketball team played Community College Whitstable (CCW) last night and after an enthralling drawn match, the girls took the edge to get the win in the shoot-out.  This was their third game of the season and proved to be their toughest test to date, with CCW going into the match also unbeaten. After a fairly even bout, the scores ended 16-16, with some great shooting from Georgia Love and Imogen Davis, fantastic drives forward from Esther Kendrick White, Sofia Bashir, and Emily Metivier, as well as strong defence from Hannah Smith and Emilia Stokes to keep the CCW score low. The shoot-out was level before a winning basket from Hannah Smith. The team were Emelia Stokes, Imogen Davis, Emily Metivier, Hannah Smith, Esther Kendrick White, Sofia Bashir and Georgia Love.  The whole team showed great character, determination and teamwork against strong opposition. Well done girls! Miss Harris and Mr Baldwin.

The Year 9 basketball team had their first match of the season Tuesday at Barton Court. It was an incredibly steep learning curve for the girls as they had not experienced a full size court in an actual sports hall before and the score most certainly reflected that during the first few minutes of the game! By half time following much interjection from the side line together with the pure grit and determination being demonstrated on court, the team started to come together. The second half saw some fantastic drives at basket by Sofia Bashir and Emily Metivier, consistent pressure in defence by Immi Davis with Georgia Love and Esther White combining well in attack. Emelia Stokes took on anyone who came within 10 metres of her and Kaddy Barnes, Jess Hughes, Issy Pottage and Andola Crowley literally hit the ground running when they were substituted onto court. The final score was 28-22 to Langton - a well deserved win against a strong Barton Court side. Well done to the girls! Miss Creaney

Netball Results

The hard work that the Year 7 team have put into their netball finally paid off on Thursday with a win against Canterbury High. Iona Lester and Leonie Goate who have been practising their shooting at lunchtimes put up some super shots and their success rate was very high managing to score 6 goals between them. Ella Stephenson, Erin Shenton and Kate Blackman linked beautifully together through the centre court driving forward onto the ball with real confidence. Anna Murphy and Martha Rolison gave the Canterbury High shooters a really hard time in the goal circle as they took so many interceptions to turn the ball around. Molly Houlihan took to the court for the second quarter and demonstrated some super spatial awareness with her placement of the ball into space. Ellie Upton well and truly came into her own when playing goal shooter alongside Iona. The ball was being fired between the two of them which was very exciting to watch. Well done girls, one very happy Miss Creaney - finally!
