A real highlight of the summer term is the Year 7 Athletics Festival that is held every year in June at Canterbury Academy. It is a fabulous opportunity to finally see the many athletes who have been attending training on a Monday after school and working so very hard to be selected for the school team.

The afternoon started with the track events and our extremely talented sprinter Martha (who runs for Invicta Athletics Club) took to the track for the 100m heat. She won by a convincing 5m, sensibly slowing towards the line to save herself for the final and the 4 x 100m relay. Lydia was running the 200m for the first time and was in a very fast heat. She did enough to get into the final and managed to dig deep and come in 3rd place. Nancy ran the 800m and came second to an extremely fast club runner with a super time of 3.02 secs. Callie stepped in to run the 1500m at very short notice but we just knew that she had the character to fulfil the role as she is full of grit and determination. She came a commendable 4th and gained a new PB. The relay team in true Langton 2023 style managed to fumble the baton not once but twice. They were so fast as individual runners that they were able to drop the baton at changeover two and three, discuss who should pick it up and then pass the baton on to Martha to make up the four places to get us into the final. Following a heated discussion about the importance of concentrating and staying calm under pressure they took to the track for what was to be the final race of the afternoon. You could have cut the tension with a knife! Kaima set off in 1st around the bend to give us a blinding start, Anastasia safely took the baton and extended our lead down the back straight to hand to Suzanne who ran a blistering 3rd leg. The baton was handed to Martha who could relax and enjoy bringing the team home in a most convincing 1st place.

On the field we had three fabulous wins; Emma in the javelin, Mira in the high jump and Martha who threw the shot. Kaima came third in the long jump and Jasmine 5th in the discus.

We have one final athletics fixture before the end of term which is going to be a district relays competition which will be extremely exciting and of course Sports Day which is now going to be held on Wednesday 12th July.
