Poetry Success
BackFive of our students were shortlisted for the Canterbury Schools’ Poetry Competition this year, the final of which took place on National Poetry Day (3rd October).
In the 12-15 category, Year 11 students, Alice-Rose and Alicia were shortlisted alongside some really exceptional poets and received some high praise in the feedback for their clever use of structure in their poem. Year 11 student Manqi, Year 9 students Meghna and Flora, and Year 8 student Evelyn were also given special mention in this category, as they only narrowly missed out on the shortlist
In the 16-18 category, Year 13 students Ava, Isaac and Niamh took three of the four short-listed places. They were told that these four entries were in a completely different category from any other entry in this category and could have competed at adult level. All three received incredible high praise for their poems and performances, as well as some very helpful critique to move them forward in their writing journeys.
Isaac placed 2nd in this category and Ava was awarded 1st place.
It was an absolute joy to hear all of our students perform their poets and be recognised for their talents in such a way.
In addition to his local success, Isaac has also been announced as a winner of the prestigious Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2024, performing his poem in a ceremony at the British Library. With over 6,600 entries, to be selected as one of the fifteen winners is a huge achievement; we are very proud of Isaac and all he has accomplished.
Well done to all our poets!
