Intellectual Vision And Endeavour Programme (IVE)

Choose a subject

‘The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing’ – Albert Einstein

The Intellectual Vision and Endeavour Programme aims to encourage a culture of ambitious intellectual expansion, independence of thought and conviction, and creative responses to challenging concepts that are delivered with confidence. It is an integral part of the Langton Extended Curriculum and is there to enhance the Langton Journey for all students. It not only develops a rich affiliation with the rigours of academic study and strategic vision, but also develops the transferrable traits that are needed in a developing global employment sector, such as effective communication, tactical organisation, successful presentation and much more.

In Key Stage 3, we set out to build strong foundations for academic research and presentation skills and we explore areas of both historical, contemporary, and futuristic focus. Students will be pushed to both ask, and respond to, challenging questions and to use their natural curiosity to expand their ideas. In Key Stage 4, we ask students to think more deeply and present them with philosophical challenges to respond to in as creative way as possible. In Key Stage 5 students access lectures given by academics at the very top of their field and will have the opportunity to craft their own companion research projects spiralling from an overarching theme. There is also opportunity to research, craft and deliver a dynamic and interactive learning experience for our younger students so that they can hand the intellectual baton on and leave a lasting and inspiring impression of what a Langton student should aspire to achieve.

Overall, the IVE Programme increases student resilience by emphasising the importance of both independent study and independence of thought, this is facilitated by their involvement in the schemes of learning, presentations, workshops, and lectures.

"The desire of knowledge, like the thirst of riches, increases ever with the acquisition of it," Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)

Every Friday morning, Year 12 students, along with selected students from other year groups, participate in the 'IVE Lecture Series.' This series explores a diverse array of intellectually stimulating and culturally rich topics that enhance and deepen the core knowledge embedded within our subject curriculums. IVE stands for Intellect, Vision, and Endeavour—values that lie at the heart of the Langton Extended Curriculum. Our goal is to equip students with the insights and experiences that will help them stand out, particularly when navigating university applications and interviews.

This year’s theme, "Ambitious Perspectives," challenges students to broaden their horizons while engaging with a wide spectrum of cultures. A key objective of the lecture series is to foster an interdisciplinary understanding of the world, linking subjects across the arts, sciences, and more. This holistic approach cultivates the cultural literacy essential for thriving in the 21st century.

Below are a taste of previous lectures, some of which may be repeated this year:

  • The Journey of AI - Dr Joe Watkins, UKC
  • Black History Month: 'The cultural and social journey of Rock Against Racism 1976-78'
  • "Are we alone in the universe?" Professor Becky Parker
  • "My journey to becoming a Bishop" The Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the Bishop of Dover.
  • The journey of stand up comedy - Professor Olly Double, UKC
  • The German TV series 'Dark' and its cultural journey - Dr Marie Martine, University of Oxford
